Consider the 8-parameter family \[ \dot x = x( 1 + a_1 x + a_2 + a_3x^2 + a_4 y^2),\quad \dot y = y(-1 + b_1 x + b_2 + b_3x^2 + b_4 y^2)\tag{S} \] on \(\mathbb{C}^2\). The linearizability quantities associated to (S) are infinitely many pairs of polynomials in the eight parameters whose simultaneous vanishing characterizes linearizability of (S); by the Hilbert basis theorem only finitely many of them are needed. The authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions that a system of the form (S) can be linearized in a neighborhood of the origin, as follows. Using computer algebra they find the first eight pairs of the linearizability quantities and solve the correspoding nonlinear system of equations; this yields thirteen sets of conditions. System (S) is linearizable only if at least one of these sets of conditions holds. The authors then show that the conditions they have identified are sufficient by constructing a linearization in each case using the existence of algebraic invariant curves (the method of Darboux). In several cases appeal is made to previous work.
