Let \(\mathfrak{o}_N\) be an orthogonal Lie algebra and \(U(\mathfrak{o}_N)\) its enveloping algebra. In the paper under review, the author shows the coincidence of two central elements of \(U(\mathfrak{o}_N)\), denoted by \(C_{\mathrm{det}}(u)\) and \(C_{\mathrm{Det}}(u)\). The first one was defined by \textit{A. Wachi} in [Lett. Math. Phys. 77, No. 2, 155--168 (2006; Zbl 1118.17002)] in terms of the so-called ``column determinant'', and the other by \textit{M. Itoh} and \textit{T. Umeda} in [Compos. Math. 127, No. 3, 333--359 (2001; Zbl 1007.17007)] using the ``symmetrized determinant''. These elements are similar to the Capelli determinant for \(\mathfrak{gl}_N\), and can be used to establish Capelli type identities \textit{M. Itoh}, [Math. Z. 246, No. 1--2, 125--154 (2004; Zbl 1053.17008)]. Although the main result has been shown before by Wachi [loc. cit.], the proof was based on two non-trivial results, namely: (i) the centrality of the first element, (ii) the eigenvalues of the second acting on simple representations. The approach used in the present article, although heavily computational, does not make use of properties (i) and (ii), and indeed yields a new proof for these results. The paper is structured as follows. In part 1, the classical case of the Capelli determinant for \(\mathfrak{gl}_N\) is reviewed, and serves as a prototype for the more technical constructions of the next parts. Parts 2--4 are devoted to the constructions of the elements under consideration, and also contain an outline of Wachi's approach. In parts 5 and 6, it is proved by long but direct computations that the two elements \(C_{\mathrm{det}}(u) = C_{\mathrm{Det}}(u)\), separating the case when \(N\) is even and odd. In part 7, the author announces that a similar approach using permanents has given him results in the case of the symplectic Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sp}_N\).
