Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded region in \((0,\infty)^r\) with piecewise smooth boundary and denote by \(V(\Omega)\) its measure. The mean value of an arithmetic function \(f(\overline n)\) in \(r\) variables by \[ M(f,\Omega)=\lim_{x\to\infty}{1\over x^rV(\Omega)}\sum_{\overline n\in x\Omega}f(\overline n). \] Denote by \(B_r\) the set of all arithmetic functions \(f\) for which the series \[ S(f)=\sum_{n_1,\dots,n_r}{f(n_1,\dots,n_r)\over n_1\cdots n_r} \] converges absolutely. The authors show that if for the function \(f\) the value \(M(f,\Omega)\) does not depend on \(\Omega\), and \(f*g\) is the \(r\)-dimensional Dirichlet convolution, then for every \(g\in B_r\) one has \(M(f*g,\Omega)=M(f,\Omega)S(g)\). This generalizes an old result of Wintner, who dealt with the case \(r=1\).
