Since the introduction of Gröbner bases for ideals in polynomial rings by Bruno Buchberger there have been many generalizations. In this paper the author publishes the results of her habilitation thesis. The aim of this thesis was to characterize Gröbner bases of ideals in so-called function rings. Function rings include polynomial rings, non-commutative rings, monoid and group rings.
