The authors explain the so-called spectral approach to a numerical evaluation of finite gap solutions to soliton equations for which the spectral curve is a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. The method works for all finite genera allowing, in particular, ``an efficient calculation of all characteristic quantities of the Riemann surface with high precision'' and it is demonstrated by examples of solutions to the KdV and KP equations constructed from the spectral curves of genera two, four, and six.
