The authors prove the existence of a planar \(G^1\) cubic spline interpolant under sufficient geometric conditions on the data points and the tangent directions. The sufficient conditions cover both the case of convex data and that of data with inflexion points. The existence proof is first carried out for the case of a single polynomial piece. An algorithm to verify the geometric conditions in advance is also presented, along with numerical evidence.
