The authors develop new FDTD schemes for the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations on dual staggered Cartesian three-dimensional lattices. The finite-difference operators are chosen such that certain error formulas estimating the dispersion error for all propagating directions are minimized. The optimization is performed for single frequency and wider frequency bands. Numerical tests confirm the improved accuracy compared with traditional FDTD schemes.
