The authors obtain optimal convergence and stability results for fully discrete version of classical first-orer projection method. The strategy is based on the introduction of an auxiliary problem that allows the analysis of the final discrete problem. Using this strategy, the authors obtain optimal error estimates under the inf-sup condition. Also, using a pressure Poisson equation, the authors are able to derive similar error estimates without the inf-sup condition. This is the first attempt to obtain convergence results for the fully discrete projection method and also the first one without the inf-sup assumption.
