The main result of the paper is that if \(\Omega, \Omega' \subset \mathbb R^2\) are open and \(f:\Omega \to \Omega'\) is a homeomorphism, then \(f\in BV_{loc}(\Omega,\mathbb R^2)\) if and only if \(f^{-1}\in BV_{loc}(\Omega',\mathbb R^2)\). It is shown that this result does not extend to the case of \(\mathbb R^n\) with \(n\geq 3\). For an arbitrary \(n\) conditions for the differentiability a.e. of \(f\) and \(f^{-1}\) are given.
