A new method for the numerical approximation of the largest Lyapunov exponent is proposed. This method is based on the computation of a spatial integration with respect to an underlying (natural) invariant measure instead of a long-term simulation of the dynamical system. The paper contains the computation of the invariant measure and the method for determining the largest Lyapunov exponent. It is applied to the Henon map, and to the use of this method for finding a blowout bifurcation of two coupled Duffing oscillators.
