This paper is concerned with the fifth order explicit finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme for solving a hierarchical size-structured population model with nonlinear growth, mortality and reproduction rates. From the numerical point of view, the main difficulty consists of the presence of global terms both in the equations and in the boundary conditions. Comparing with lower order schemes for the same model, the presented methods produce accurate results even for fewer grid points. Numerical computations included in the paper illustrate the good performance and the robustness of the method.
