The author deals with the Cauchy problem for second-order operators with two independent variables. He is interested in the influence of the principal part, that is the author studies the Cauchy problem for \[ p= D^2_t- D_x a(t,x)D_x,\quad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^2 \] which has the divergence free form with Cauchy data \(t= 0\), with \(a(t,x)\geq 0\). Assuming \(a\in C^N([0, T]; \gamma^{(s_0)}(\mathbb{R}))\), \(s_0> 1\) and sufficiently close to 1, the author proves well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in Gevrey classes \(\gamma(s)\), for \(1\leq s<{N+ n^2\over 2(N+ 2n)}\), \(n\geq n_0\).
