This paper was motivated by the question on the existence of a Tikhonov space that is not sequentially closed in its Stone-Čech compactification, which circulated among topologists in the 60ies, and was ``resolved'' in the negative by \textit{G. Reid} [Math. Z. 102, 227--235 (1967; Zbl 0153.04302)]. Then an example of such a space (the Tikhonov plank with a removed point) was presented by Burckel in his review to the paper by \textit{P. Flor} [Math. Scand. 23, 169--170 (1968; Zbl 0182.36003)]. Twenty years later this question appeared again in the second edition of the book [\textit{J. Conway}, A course in functional analysis. Graduate texts in mathematics, 96. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1990; Zbl 0706.46003)]. Having in mind this situation, the authors decided to make a thorough study of Tikhonov spaces \(X\) that are sequentially closed in their Stone-Čech compactification \(\beta X\). They refer to such spaces as Conway spaces. Moreover, for every closure operator \(C\) the authors define a corresponding notion of a \(C\)-Conway space. The main accent is on the study of categorial properties of the class of \(C\)-Conway spaces. After doing that, the authors study the Conway property in topological groups. They notice that sequentially complete groups are Conway while the converse is not true. However those two properties coincide in some classes of topological groups, for example: free (Abelian) topological groups, pseudocompact groups, etc. The paper ends with several open problems related to the Conway properties.
