The statistical interpretation of quantum theory encoded in the Born rule describes the probability distribution of measurement outcomes, with a state of the system being pre-assigned. Quantum statistical inference goes in reverse and attempts to estimate quantites that are intrinsic to the very definition of the quantum state, but based solely on the measurement data. The paper belongs to a quantum line of research in statistical inference theory, where the non-commuativity idea is extended to all major concepts (c.f. the keywords list) of statistics and probability theory. The presentation is a self-contained introduction to the theory of quantum statistical experiments. Technically, the paper generalizes earlier results of D. Petz on quantum sufficiency and adopts to the non-commutative language Le Cam's idea of local asymptotic normality in classical statistical inference.
