A generalized Kähler structure on a manifold \(M\) is a triple \((g, J_+, J_{-})\) consisting of a Riemannian metric \(g\) and two integrable almost complex structures \(J_{\pm}\) with the property \(g(J_{\pm}X,J_{\pm}Y)=g(X,Y)\). Refer to [\textit{M. Gualtieri}, ``Generalized complex geometry,'' D. Ph. Thesis, Univ. of Oxford (2003)] and [\textit{N. J. Hitchin}, ``Generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds'', Q. J. Math. 54, 281--308 (2003; Zbl 1076.32019)]. The author proves the following: Theorem A: Let \((g, J_+, J_{-})\) be a generalized Kähler structure with \([J_+, J_{-}]=0\). Then the \(\pm\)-eigenspaces of \(J_+J_{-}\) define \(g\)-orthogonal \(J_{\pm}\)-holomorphic foliations such that \(g\) restricts to a Kähler metric. Theorem B: Let \((M,J)\) be a compact complex surface whose holomorphic tangent bundle splits as direct sum of holomorphic sub-bundles. Then \((M,J)\) admits a non-trivial generalized Kähler structure \((g, J_+, J_{-})\) with \(J_+=J\) and \([J_+,J_{-}]=0\). A generalized Kähler structure is called ambi-Hermitian if \(J_+\neq \pm J_{-}\) and \(J_+\) and \(J_{-}\) define different orientations on the manifold. Compact complex surfaces admitting an ambi-Hermitian generalized Kähler structure are classified into six types. Besides, this paper gives also a survey of related matters on generalized Kähler structures.
