    In altägyptischen Texten war die Standardmethode für die Wiedergabe eines echten Bruches \(b\) die Darstellung als Summe von Stammbrüchen \(a_j\), \(b= a_1+ a_2+\cdots\), \(a_1> a_2>\cdots\). Für die Verdoppelung, eine der Grundoperationen des altägyptischen praktischen Rechnens, benötigte man daher die entsprechenden Darstellungen für das Doppelte eines Stammbruches (\(b= 2: n\) in heutiger Schreibweise). Der berühmte Papyrus Rhind enthält eine Tabelle für die ungeraden \(n\) zwischen 3 und 101. Viele moderne Autoren haben sich Gedanken darüber gemacht, auf welche Weise man die Zerlegungen in der Tabelle aus den möglichen Darstellungen von \(b\) (\(=2: n\)) als Summe von Stammbrüchen ausgewählt hat. Der Verf. fügt diesen Überlegungen eine weitere hinzu.
