The paper under review studies the gradient estimates for the positive solutions of the degenerate parabolic equation \(u_t=\Delta F(u)+H(u)\) on a complete Riemannian manifold. The main results include a Harnack differential inequality which generalizes the corresponding results for the positive solutions of the equation \(u_t=\Delta (F(u))\) obtained by \textit{S. T. Yau} [Commun. Anal. Geom. 2, No.~3, 431--450 (1994; Zbl 0841.58059)] and a Hamilton-type estimate for the positive solutions of the equation \(u_t=\Delta (F(u))\) which includes the corresponding results about the positive solutions of the equation \(u_t=\Delta u\) obtained by \textit{P. Souplet} and \textit{Q. S. Zhang} [arXiv:math. DG/0502079] as a special case. Some applications of these estimates are also given.
