The second author has written many articles characterising Gaussian distributions on abelian groups [see e.g. \textit{G. M. Feldman} and \textit{P. Graczyk}, J. Theor. Probab. 13, No. 3, 859--869 (2000; Zbl 0973.60011) and \textit{G. M. Feldman}, Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 126, No. 1, 91--102 (2003; Zbl 1016.62005)]. The Skitovich-Darmois theorem is one such characterisation. In this article the authors prove the Skitovich-Darmois theorem for continuous and measurable functions.
