Let \(R\) be a prime ring with extended centroid \(C\) and maximal right ring of quotients \(Q\); and let \(U\) be a noncentral Lie ideal of \(R\). Let \(f\colon U\to Q\) be an additive map such that \[ [f(x),f(y)]-[x,y]\in C\quad\text{for all }x,y\in U.\tag{*} \] It is proved that one of the following must hold: (a) \(\text{char}(R)=2\) and \(R\) satisfies the standard identity of degree 4; (b) \(f\) is of the form \(f(x)=\lambda x+\mu(x)\) for all \(x\in U\), where \(\lambda\in C\) and \(\lambda^2=1\), and \(\mu\) is an additive map from \(U\) to \(C\). The condition (*) generalizes the notion of strong commutativity preserving map introduced by the reviewer and \textit{G. Mason} [Math J. Okayama Univ. 34, 135-144 (1992; Zbl 0810.16042)], and the theorem is motivated by a result of \textit{M. Brešar} and \textit{C. R. Miers} [Can. Math. Bull. 37, No. 4, 457-460 (1994; Zbl 0824.16021)].
