This paper generalizes the results of \textit{J. Bergen} and \textit{D. S. Passman} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 334, 259-280 (1992; Zbl 0766.17007); and J. Algebra 166, 568-610 (1994; Zbl 0805.17011)] on enveloping algebras of Lie superalgebras to Lie colour algebras, which are Lie algebras graded by a finite abelian group equipped with a bilinear form on which suitable twisted versions of antisymmetry and the Jacobi identity hold. The methods and results are very similar to those of Bergen and Passman in the two papers cited above, and many of their proofs generalize easily, but more extensive calculations of the adjoint map (and a technique for reducing to the superalgebra case) are required here. The main theme of the paper is that the join of the finite-dimensional ideals of a Lie colour algebra \(L\) controls certain properties of its enveloping algebra \(U(L)\).
