    An asymptotic formula due to Titchmarsh for the eigenvalues of \[ y'' + \{ \lambda - q(x) \} y = 0, \quad y(0)=y(a), \quad y'(0)=y'(a) \] is improved to a higher degree of accuracy by using a Prüfer transformation, not depending on Floquet theory. With the idea of the rotation number, this method is then extended to \[ (| y'| ^{p-2}y')' + \{ \lambda-q(x) \} | y| ^{p-2}y = 0. \]
