Joinings of measure-theoretic dynamical systems were introduced by \textit{H. Furstenberg} [Math. Syst. Theory 1, 1--49 (1967; Zbl 0146.28502)] and have become a useful tool. Roughly speaking, the notion of a product of dynamical systems is generalized by taking the common part of two systems into account. The author studies an extension of this notion to the noncommutative case. The dynamical system is replaced by a faithful normal state on a sigma-finite von Neumann algebra and a representation of a group via *-automorphisms. In this context, the author studies ergodicity and conditional expectations in terms of joinings.
