Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be real normed spaces. A map \(f:X\longrightarrow Y\) preserves equality of distance iff there exists a function \(p:{\mathbb R}^+_0 \rightarrow {\mathbb R}^+_0\) such that \(\| f(x_1)-f(x_2)\| =p(\| x_1-x_2\| )\) for every \(x_1,x_2\in X\). A result by \textit{A. Vogt} [Stud. Math. 45, 43--48 (1973; Zbl 0222.46015)] shows that continuous surjective maps which preserve equality of distance are also necessarily affine. If \(\dim(X) \geq 2\), the continuity condition can be dropped. In this paper, the above result is extended, relaxing the surjectivity condition as follows. If \(X\) has dimension greater than 1, \(Y\) is a strictly convex space, and \(f:X\rightarrow Y\) preserves equality of distance such that \(f(X)\) contains a segment, then \(f\) is affine.
