A surface \(X\) with nodes is said to be hyperelliptic if it admits an involution \(h: X \to X\) such that the quotient space \(X/\langle h \rangle\) has genus zero. According to the category of a surface \(X\) with nodes the author studies the equivalence between hyperellipticity of \(X\) and the existence of a degree 2 morphism \(\pi: X \to Y\), where \(Y\) has genus zero. For example \(X\) is considered as a compact and connected Riemann surface with nodes, a symmetric Riemann surface with nodes, and a Klein surface with nodes. It is shown that for the hyperellipticity of a Klein surface with nodes, the morphism \(\pi\) needs a further assumption about the inessential nodes of \(X\). It is also shown that the hyperelliptic involution of \(X\) is unique if \(X\) is a stable Riemann surface, but is not if \(X\) is a Klein surfaces with nodes. Furthermore, the author shows that if a symmetric Riemann surface \((X,\sigma)\) with nodes is hyperelliptic, then the quotient space \(X/\langle \sigma \rangle\) by the antianalytic involution \(\sigma\) is a hyperelliptic Klein surface with nodes, and gives an example that the contrary is not true.
