The authors study the Cauchy problem for the hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system, which is a simplified model of the radiating gas. The dimension of the space variables is \(n=3,4,5\). The system is assumed to be genuinely nonlinear in the first characteristic field. The aim of the paper is to obtain decay rates to the planar rarefaction waves. The analysis is based on the \(L^p\)-energy method.
