In a recent article [Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 91, 33--104 (2005; Zbl 1075.11058)] the authors proposed conjectures for the full asymptotics of the moments of \(L\)-functions. For example, in the case of the Riemann zeta-function the authors conjecture that for a positive integer \(k\), \[ \int_{0}^{T}\Biggl| \zeta\biggl({1\over 2}+it\biggr)\Biggr| ^{2k}\, dt = \int_{0}^{T}P_{k} \biggl(\log{t\over 2\pi}\biggr)\, dt + O\bigl(T^{{1\over 2}+\varepsilon}\bigr), \] where \(P_k\) is a polynomial of degree \(k^2\) given implicitly as a certain \(k\)-fold residue. The way the authors arrived at such conjectures relies on number theoretic heuristics based on the approximate functional equation. The conjectures are supported by their coinciding with the few proved cases and also with conjectures made through other number-theoretical methods and results from random matrix theory. Another important source of support are numerical confirmations. For this purpose it becomes necessary to use all the lower order terms of the polynomials which arise in the conjectures. In this paper an algorithm for obtaining meromorphic expressions in \(k\) for the coefficients of \(P_{k}(x)\) is described. These expressions are too long to be quoted here. The authors also explain how the numerical computation of the coefficients can be carried out, and present some tables and graphs for the comparison of the conjectured values with the actual data (including some cases of non-integer values of \(k\)). At the end of the paper the analogous approach for moments of quadratic Dirichlet \(L\)-functions and of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve \(L\)-function (which are examples of unitary-symplectic and orthogonal families respectively) evaluated at the critical point \({1\over 2}\) is outlined.
