The authors consider the eigenvalue problem \[ -\Delta u = \lambda \rho u \quad \text{in }S, \qquad u = 0 \quad\text{on }\partial S, \] where \( S\) is a square with edge 1 and \( \rho (x, y )\) is a positive function. This problem is an expansion of the eigenvalue problem for the operator \(-\Delta.\) A finite element method is constructed using basis functions of special form. The proof of error estimate formulas is based on known results.
