In the setting of ZF (= Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory without the axiom of choice), the author investigates compactness conditions in the theory of Banach spaces. Typical result: The axiom of countable choice properly implies that in a uniformly convex Banach space the closed unit ball is compact in the convex topology.
