Let \(p\) be a point in a complex manifold. Assume that the Kobayashi-Royden pseudometric is continuous and positive in every direction at \(p\). The authors prove that the derivative of the \(k\)th Lempert function at \(p\) exists and equals the \(k\)th Kobayashi pseudometric there; moreover the continuity assumption is essential. Of special interest are the cases \(k = 1\) : the derivative of the (one disc) Lempert function is the Kobayashi-Royden pseudometric, and \(k = \infty\) : the derivative of the Kobayashi pseudodistance is the Kobayashi-Busemann pseudometric. These generalize results proved for taut manifolds (where continuity is automatic) by \textit{Myung-Yull Pang} [Pac J. Math. 162, No.1, 121-141 (1994; Zbl 0788.32020)] and \textit{Masashi Kobayashi} [Pac J. Math. 194, No.1, 117-128 (2000; Zbl 1020.32007)] respectively.
