Multiquadrics, inverse quadratics and other standard choices of radial basis functions exhibit deficient convergence properties when they are scaled to become increasingly flat. On the other hand, the flat basis function limit is an important feature for the use of radial basis functions with irregular nodes in higher dimensions. The authors investigate a class of radial basis functions that consists of oscillatory radial functions; contains the Gaussian as a marginal case; and appears immune to divergence in the flat limit.
