A semigroup is called principal ideal semigroup if its right and left ideals are principal. The combinatorial simple principal ideal semigroups generated by two elements were described by \textit{L. Megyesi} and \textit{G. Pollák} [Stud. Sci. Math. Hung. 16, 437-448 (1981; Zbl 0488.20048)]. The ``most general'' among them is the Rédei semigroup and the ``most special'' the bicyclic semigroup. \textit{D. B. McAlister} determined the compatible semilattice orders on the bicyclic semigroup [Commun. Algebra 27, No. 9, 4179-4208 (1999; Zbl 0946.20037)]. The authors of the present paper determine all compatible total orders on the homomorphic images of the Rédei semigroup. They show that each compatible semilattice order on the Rédei semigroup is a total order, and that this is not true for an arbitrary combinatorial simple principal ideal semigroup generated by two elements different from the Rédei semigroup.
