The multi-graded Hilbert scheme parametrizes all ideals with a given Hilbert function. An important subclass is the class of all toric Hilbert schemes. This paper details the main component of a toric Hilbert scheme in case it contains a point corresponding to an affine toric variety. Here the component can be viewed as the set of all flat limits of this variety. The main tool used in the paper is a computation of the fan of the toric variety. The treatment is very self-contained and thorough. Moreover, using a Chow morphism, a connection with certain GIT quotients of the toric variety is included. Some helpful examples are provided as well.
