For a compact metric space \(X\), the Lipschitz algebra \(\text{Lip}\,(X)\) is the Banach algebra of all real or complex valued functions on \(X\) satisfying a Lipschitz condition. The peripheral spectrum \(\sigma_\pi(f)\) is the subset of the usual spectrum consisting of points with modulus equal to the spectral radius. The authors study the problem of characterizing maps between Lipschitz algebras that preserve the peripheral spectrum of products. They call such a map peripherally-multiplicative. \textit{A. Luttman} and \textit{T. Tonev} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 135, No.~11, 3589--3598 (2007; Zbl 1134.46030)] obtained a chararacterization of peripherally-multiplicative mappings between uniform algebras. The paper under review presents the corresponding result for the Lipschitz algebras. The result is as follows: Theorem: Let \(\Phi:\, \text{Lip}\,(X)\rightarrow\text{Lip}\,(Y)\) be a surjective map such that for all \(f, g\in \text{Lip}\,(X)\) \[ \sigma_\pi(\Phi(f)\Phi(g))=\sigma_\pi(fg). \] Then there exist a Lipschitz function \(\tau:\, Y\rightarrow\{-1,1\}\) and a Lipschitz homeomorphism \(\varphi:\, Y\rightarrow X\) such that \[ \Phi(f)=\tau\cdot(f\circ \varphi)\quad (f\in\text{Lip}\,(X)). \]
