Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with \(1\not= 0\), and let \(F\) be an \(R\)-module. An \(R\)-submodule \(E\) of \(F\) is said to be a small submodule if, whenever an \(R\)-submodule \(G\) of \(F\) satisfies \(E+G=F\), it must be \(G=F\). Let \((V,M)\) be a valutaion domain which is distinct from its quotient field \(K\), and let \(\pi:V\rightarrow V/M\) be the canonical surjection. Let \(D\) be a subring of \(V/M\). The main result of the paper is that the pullback \(R=\pi^{-1}(D)\) has the property that \(V\) (and hence each integral overring of \(R\)) is a small \(R\)-submodule of \(K\). Moreover the author studies the application to the most special type of such a pullback, the classical \(D+M\) construction. Another application is considered, to the pseudo-valuation domains of Hedstrom-Houston and, more generally, to the locally pseudo-valuation domains.
