The author introduces the following notion. A bounded domain \(M\) in \(\mathbb{C}^n\) is said to have the \textit{uniform squeezing property} if there exists constants \(a\) and \(b\) such that for each point \(x\in M\) there exists an embedding \(\phi_x:M\to \mathbb{C}^n\) with \(\phi_x(x)=0\) and \(B_a(\phi_x(x))\subset \phi_x(AM)\subset B_b(\phi_x(x))\). Here \(B_r(s)\) denotes the ball of radius \(r\) and center \(s\). Examples of spaces having the uniform squeezing property are: (1) bounded homogeneous domains; (2) bounded strongly convex domains; (3) bounded domains which cover a compact Kähler manifold; (4) Teichmüller spaces. The author studies various properties of such domains, including pseudo-convexity, completeness of the Bergman metric, hyperconvexity, existence of a complete Kähler-Einstein metric, Kähler-hyperbolicity, vanishing of cohomology groups and quasi-isometry of various metrics (namely, the Carathéodory, the Kobayashi, the Bergman, and the Kähler-Einstein metrics). He also establishes geometric properties for manifolds covered by bounded domains, and he gives a simple criterion to provide examples related to a problem of Serre about Stein properties of holomorphic fiber bundles.
