At the beginning of the 18th century the decimal fractions have begun common in Germany and soon afterwards there appeared the problem of periodic ones. The author describes contributions by J. H. Lambert, J. III Bernoulli and J. H. Lagrange up to C. F. Gauss who gave complete solution of the problem as well as of many related questions in his Disquisitiones Arithmeticae.
