A tower of algebras is a graded algebra \(A=\bigoplus_nA_n\) over the field of complex numbers, such that for each \(n\) the \(n\)-component \(A_n\) is a finite-dimensional algebra with unit \(1_n\). Moreover \(A_0=\mathbb{C}\), the external product \(A_m\otimes A_n\to A_{n+m}\) is an injective homomorphism of algebras satisfying two more technical conditions. The main example is the graded algebra \(\bigoplus_n\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak S_n]\), where \(\mathfrak S_n\) is the symmetric group and the product \(\mathfrak S_m\otimes\mathfrak S_n\to\mathfrak S_{n+m}\) is concatenation. It is proved that induction and restriction yields a graded Hopf algebra structure on the Grothendieck groups \(\bigoplus_nG_0(A_n)\) and \(\bigoplus_nK_0(A_n)\).
