The model, developed by \textit{Z. C. Feng} and \textit{P. R. Sethna} [J. Fluid Mech. 199, 495--518 (1989; Zbl 0659.76026)] of a fluid in an open container of square cross-section, which is vibrated vertically, is considered. Various stable periodic orbits are numerically located and then studied. Such orbits correspond to stable quasiperiodic surface waves in the physical system. The periodic orbits are associated with heteroclinic bifurcations, which are related to a continuum of heteroclinic connections from the integrable Hamiltonian limit. It turns out that some of those heteroclinic connections persist in the presence of small damping. Chaotic attractors are also found, and they correspond to chaotic surface waves. Dynamics in the neighbourhood of a heteroclinic bifuracation is examined in detail using approximate Poincaré maps.
