The superconductivity close to the Mott state appears in a variety of single-band Hubbard systems with repulsive interactions such as ladders, the checkerboard Hubbard model, and the homogeneous Hubbard model in two dimensions. The main points developed in the present paper are the following: (i) a theoretical proof of \(d\)--wave superconductivity; (ii) introduction of Gutzwiller-type projected BCS wavefunctions; (iii) qualitative study near the critical temperature \(T_c\) in the 2D Hubbard model for weak interactions; (iv) the Single-Band model; (v) nodal-antinodal dichotomy and 2 gaps versus 1 gap; (vi) Fermi liquid for severely overdoped systems; (vii) breakdown of Landau-Fermi liquid in the overdoped regime; (viii) ultracold atoms as quantum simulators. The authors also discuss also discuss theoretical predictions for the \(d\)--wave superconducting phase as well as the pseudogap phase, and address the crossover to the overdoped regime.
