Let \(A\) be a definite quaternion algebra over \(\mathbb Q\). Then any maximal order of \(A\) has discriminant \((p_1\dots p_e)^2\), where \(p_1,\dots,p_e\) are the primes at which \(A\) is nonsplit (and \(e\) must be odd). The main result is that the space of newforms of weight 2 and level \(p_1\dots p_e\) is just the cuspidal part of the space of the theta series coming from maximal integral lattices on \(A\). Furthermore, using the Eichler commutation relation and an idea coming out of the Yoshida lifting, the author shows how to express each newform as an explicit linear combination of such theta series. The coefficients of these linear combinations come from cuspidal eigenvectors of Brandt matrices.
