The authors give a gradient theory of plasticity, in which the plastic strain rate is considered as an independent kinematic variable. The stress measures, work-conjugate to plastic strain and its gradient satisfy a yield condition. At internal interfaces is also considered the plastic work. The theory has the potential to account for grain size effects in polycrystals. The plastic work is positive. The mathematical structure of this elasto-plastic strain-gradient theory has similarities to conventional rigid-plasticity theory.
