The purpose of this paper is to connect the Riemann Hypothesis for functions belonging to the well-known Selberg class of \(L\)-functions and some density statements in the space \(L^2(0,+\infty)\). More precisely, let \(F(s)\) be an element of the Selberg class satisfying the generalized Riemann hypothesis. Let \(a^{-1}(n)\) denote the coefficients of the Dirichlet series generated by \(1/F(s)\), and let \(\chi(x)\) denote the characteristic function of the unit interval. Then there exists a natural number \(N_0\) such that, for \(N \geq N_0\), the distance in \(L^2(0,+\infty)\) between \(\chi(x)\) and \[ \begin{align*}{& \sum_{n=1}^N a^{-1}(n)\exp\left(-a\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}\right)\psi_F(1/nx)\quad(a>0)\cr& \psi_F(x) = \text{Res}\left(\frac{x^s}{s}F(s),1\right) - \sum_{n\le x}a(n)\cr}\end{align*} \] is \(\ll (\log\log N)^{-1/3}\). From this result the author deduces a statement equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis for \(F(s)\) in terms of certain convergence properties of sequences with the function \(\psi_F\).
