This article deals with the existence of the canonical subgroup for Hilbert modular varieties. The authors prove that such a subgroup exists for abelian varieties with real multiplication and with almost ordinary reduction. Moreover, they give sharp bounds for the vague notion of having almost ordinary reduction. In this way, they manage to get a precise generalization of the work of \textit{N. M. Katz} [in: Modular Functions of one Variable III, Proc. internat. Summer School, Univ. Antwerp 1972, Lect. Notes Math. 350, 69--190 (1973; Zbl 0271.10033)] about elliptic curves. Their proof of the existence of the canonical subgroup has a rigid-analytic flavor and is based on a complete understanding of the forgetful map between Hilbert modular varieties with and without parahoric level structure. One should also mention the work of \textit{A. Abbes} and \textit{A. Mokrane} [Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Etud. Sci. 99, 117--162 (2004; Zbl 1062.14057)], \textit{F. Andreatta} and \textit{C. Gasbarri} [Compos. Math. 143, No. 3, 566--602 (2007; Zbl 1219.11087)], \textit{M. Kisin} and \textit{K. F. Lai} [Am. J. Math. 127, No. 4, 735--783 (2005; Zbl 1129.11020)] and \textit{L. Fargues} [``La filtration canonique des points de torsion des groupes \(p\)-divisibles'', preprint (2009)] who have also proven the existence of the canonical subgroup by different methods.
