The article is concerned with the Durrmeyer--Bézier operators introduced by \textit{X.-M. Zeng} and \textit{W. Chen} [J. Approximation Theory 102, No. 1, 1--12 (2000; Zbl 0956.41013)]. For functions of bounded variation the authors obtain a new estimate of the rate of convergence, which improves the corresponding result given by Zeng and Chen. The proofs are based on probabilistic methods and inequality techniques.
