The authors consider a nonlinear model of Gurtin-MacCamy for evolution of the age density of a population. After describing the details of the model they present convergence analysis for a new numerical scheme that is based on quadratures of the integrals that appear in the explicit representation of a solution obtained by integration along characteristics. They show the second order convergence for general tails. In particular, the method is applicable to families of mortality functions that include those most often used in population modelling. At the end of the paper some numerical simulations with corresponding experimental orders of convergence are presented.
