Let \(G\) be a group and let \(A\) be a \(G\)-module. We consider the symmetric cohomology \(HS^*(G;A)\) of \(G\) with coefficients in \(A\) and we denote by \(\rho_*\colon HS^*(G;A)\to H^*(G;A)\) the natural map which is injective for \(*=2\) [see the author, J. Algebra 322, No. 4, 1360-1378 (2009; Zbl 1172.81014)]. In this paper the author gives an explicit characterization for group extensions that correspond to elements of \(HS^2(G;A)\). He also gives conditions for the map \(\rho_*\) to be injective.
