There are theorems of Clemens and Voisin of the following type: Let \(X\) be a generic hypersurface of sufficiently large degree in \(\mathbb P^n\). Then, (i) there is a lower bound of the genus of possible curves \(C\subseteq X\), (ii) low-dimensional subvarieties \(Y\subseteq X\) are always of general type, and (iii) distinct closed points of \(X\) are not rationally equivalent. The present paper generalizes these results to the case of certain smooth, projective toric varieties \(\mathbb P(\Delta)\) replacing \(\mathbb P^n\) as the ambient space. Here, \(\Delta\) denotes the associated lattice polytope in the character lattice \(M=\mathbb Z^n\). An essential role in both establishing and proving the results is played by the surjectivity of the multiplication map of linear systems, e.g.\ of the surjectivity of \((\Delta_1\cap M) + (\Delta_2\cap M) \to (\Delta_1+\Delta_2)\cap M\) when \(\Delta_i\) are integral Minkowski summands of \(\Delta\). Another ingredient of the proof is an infinitesimal Torelli theorem, i.e.\ the injectivity of the infinitesimal period map, for the hypersurfaces in question.
