Gauss' work in number theory became again a point of interested in the twentieth century with the advent of electronic computing machines. In the United States the mathematicians Derrick Henry Lehmer and Daniel Shanks became involved with Gauss' work which influenced their own research. The author follows the influence of Gauss on Lehmer and Shanks on one and hand and the influence of the computer on mathematics on the other hand.
