The authors study a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) system of uniaxial perfectly matched layer method for electromagnetic scattering problems. This analysis is carried out provided that a 2D exterior domain is truncated by a square with a perfectly matched layer filled by a certain artificial medium. Besides, an artificial boundary condition is imposed on the outer boundary. In such a way, the authors obtain the stability of the FDTD system on the truncated domain. The proof strongly relies on the energy method. Numerical experiments are designed to approve the theoretical analysis. The paper is structured as follows. Section 2 introduces the differential system in a truncated domain, while Section 3 constructs the FDTD system. Next, the authors deduce an equivalent FDTD system only expressed by the small variables. Section 5 uses energy methods to establish the stability estimates. Numerical examples are provided in Section 6. The paper concludes with some appendices in the last section.
