Approximations by sums of exponential functions and Gaussian functions are studied which are related to the well-known expansions such as Fourier sums. Results are simplified and improved by using, among other things, Poisson's summation formula which appealed to for finding quadrature rules. A particular emphasis is given to possible applications of these approximation methods. In the context of the applications and implementations of the methods, fast algorithms are studied which are derived from a multiresolution structure related to the wavelet approach to functional approximation.
